Saarainen will join Nexstim’s management team and report directly to CEO Mikko Karvinen. Karvinen credits Järnefelt, who has been with the company for more than 18 years, with a pivotal role in shaping the design and development of its products.
Saarainen brings R&D leadership from regulated medical technology
Saarainen is currently CTO of Evondos, responsible for technology, innovation and R&D, and previously held R&D roles at Thermo Fisher Scientific, ultimately leading R&D for clinical diagnostics systems. He has more than 20 years of experience in in vitro diagnostics, medical devices and health technology.
“Recently, I’ve also become particularly interested in the practical use of AI in R&D and product development to improve productivity, decision-making and quality,” says Ville Saarainen.
The handover comes as the NBS 6 platform gains new indications
In February, Nexstim’s NBS 6 system received EU MDR certification for post-operative rehabilitation. In March, it received FDA clearance for treating obsessive compulsive disorder and for adolescent depression. Nexstim is also working towards a planned 10-year exclusive partnership with Sinaptica Therapeutics to develop a neuromodulation system for Alzheimer’s disease.
Sales are growing, but first-half profit weakened
In 2025, net sales rose 25.6% to EUR 11.0 million and the operating result turned positive at EUR 0.6 million. In H1 2026, net sales grew 16.1% to EUR 5.2 million, while the operating result was EUR -0.3 million against EUR -0.2 million a year earlier.
In May, Nexstim raised EUR 5 million to support growth and commercialisation of the NBS 6 platform, including directed share issues to Eiffel Investment Group and Brainlab.
“His expertise and proven track record create a strong platform for our continued growth and future success,” says Mikko Karvinen, CEO of Nexstim.
